Upon hooking a fish, the hook ascends and the player tilts the device to catch as many fish as possible en route to the surface. The player casts the line and tilts the device to avoid the fish as the hook sinks. The game mechanics consist of three minigames: casting the fishing line, catching fish, and shooting the fish in the air. The player fishes in pursuit of fame as a fisherman named Billy. Reviewers noted Vlambeer's struggle against the copy of their game and praised the game's balance and both visual and game design. It won an Apple's 2013 Design Award and was their iPhone game of the year. Ridiculous Fishing received "near-universal perfect scores" at launch-what review score aggregator Metacritic describes as "universal acclaim". Artist Greg Wohlwend moved in with iOS developer Zach Gage to work 14-hour days on the game. The team worked on other games and spoke publicly about the situation to a standing ovation at the 2012 Game Developers Conference before resolving to scrap the majority of their work and finish the game. A year after Vlambeer began their iOS development, Gamenauts released Ninja Fishing, a clone of the game. The game was first released as a Flash game Radical Fishing with the same basic mechanics. Nijman developed the idea during a television show about tuna fishermen. Players then touch the screen to shoot fish out of the sky for money that can be spent on upgrades. Players cast a fishing line into the ocean and use motion controls to avoid fish as the hook sinks and to catch as many fish as possible as the reel retracts. The game was developed and published by Vlambeer-Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman-and released for iOS on March 13, 2013, and later that year for Android. The game is known for its developers' battle against a cloned version of their game released by another company. The presentation of the game is excellent, something not seen so often anymore on the App Store.Ridiculous Fishing is a mobile fishing video game where players use motion and touch controls to catch fish and subsequently shoot them out of the sky for cash. Ridiculous Fishing is an amazing game that shows how proper balance can make a game worth an initial purchase. There is some frustration when you hook something quickly at the surface and have to restart, but you quickly learn how to use powerups and the tilt controls to fish the depths. Earning the money to purchase the higher-end items is worth the time. The balance of the game is great and the store's prices actually make sense. Some are recognizable as fish, but others look nightmarish. It uses an 8-bit style with the fish looking kind of like fish, but more like bizarre creatures. The visuals of Ridiculous Fishing are interesting. When they are destroyed you earn money to use in the store. Once you reel the fish to the surface, you have limited time to blast them all out of the air. Do you buy more line or a new weapon? Each new area has fish that are worth more money than the previous, but they require stronger weapons. The difficulty of Ridiculous Fishing correlates with how smart you are with the items you purchase. The different powerups can help you get your lure deeper into the ocean to find new species that will unlock new fishing grounds. Using tilt to maneuver the hook around the various fish and sea creatures and touch to use items or weapons when you reel fish to the surface, the controls are polished and very easy to use. Usabilityīuild for iOS devices, playing on the iPad is most enjoyable. It's bizarre how an already existing gameplay was honed to this perfection. Once you earn enough money to buy new powerups like the drill or toaster, the game becomes even more fun. You will never get frustrated as Ridiculous Fishing is ridiculously addictive. As you fish to earn money to purchase more lures, weapons, and line to fish deeper into the ocean, it feels natural. No microtransactions here.Īnother great thing about Ridiculous Fishing is that the game is balanced perfectly. Presenting itself as a straight-forward fishing arcade game, Ridiculous Fishing does one major element right - it's a one time purchase.
